Another great album from 1999- musicians doing something really creative and deep within the electronica/dance thing - evokes images of what Steely Dan might have sounded like if they came onto the scene later, minus the pole lodged in their nether region ...

Soundtrack - Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973)

I was first exposed to the insane joys of Hindi films back in the early '80s, by an Indian neighbor in Rochester, NY, who would invite us over to see well-worn VHS versions of Bollywood classics -
flash forward to 2008, and the A.R. Rahman Slumdog Millionaire phenomenon, sparking a renewed interest in this most eclectic of film/music genres.

So, of course, I dug into films with A.R. Rahman soundtracks - in the 2004 film "Swades", there is a scene of an outdoor film night in a small Indian village - the film playing is "Yaadon Ki Baaraat", which turns out to be one incredible gem of a film and soundtrack. Before A.R. Rahman, there was R.D. Burman, who is responsible for this wonderous mash-up of 60's spy music, surfer guitar, and the gorgeous "playback singer" vocals of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, and the rest.

1. Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar: Lekar Ham Diwana Dil
2. Kishore Kumar & R.D. Burman: Aap Ke Kamre Men
3. Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar: O Meri Soni
4. Lata Mangeshkar, Padmini, Shivangi & Chorus: Yaadon Ki Baarat
5. Asha Bholse & Mohd. Rafi: Chura Liya Hai Tum Ne
6. Kishore Kumar & Mohd. Rafi: Yaadon Ki Baarat

Thomas Mapfumo & The Blacks Unlimited - Gwindingwi Rine Shumba (1980)

Thomas Mapfumo, the lion of Zimbabwe, is without a doubt the most underrated and underappreciated musical giant from the African continent. He pioneered a music of liberation called Chimurenga, which is simply beyond description - give it a listen, and see if you don't agree - one of the things that blows you away right away is the use of 12/8 time - check out the first track "Shumba" - depending on whether you focus on the "3" or the "4" beat, the song sounds completely different - sort of like a musical M.C. Escher type experience!

There are lots of great resources on the great Mapfumo exist - Google him, and also check out Banning Eyre's writings on the music of Zimbabwe. Thomas is still recording great music, and touring now and then from his home base in Oregon. Essential.

This was the second album with his band, unavailable in the States other than this wonderful vinyl rip I found on Global Groove - thanks for keeping the voice of Zimbabwe ringing out!

Missy Elliot - Respect M.E. (2006)

Okay, okay, I am a musical snob, governed by irrational forces that cause me to consistently avoid "greatest hits" compilations - the logic is something like "if you can't be bothered to check out what the artist was trying to do originally, don't mess with it" - but this import collection is too perfect to resist! Missy is in the house!

Martin Denny - Hawaiian Touch (1966)

Poly Styrene - Translucence (1980)

For those who like to rock, avoid this album. For those whose tastes are a little more eclectic and aren't afraid of sampling new delicacies, than this will definitely be a tasty little morsel. The most striking element of the record is Poly's gorgeous singing, supported by the supple, jazzy arrangements. Clearly, not as aggressive or confrontational as her work with X-Ray Spex, but equally as rewarding. [Source: AMG]
