Thomas Mapfumo & The Blacks Unlimited - Gwindingwi Rine Shumba (1980)

Thomas Mapfumo, the lion of Zimbabwe, is without a doubt the most underrated and underappreciated musical giant from the African continent. He pioneered a music of liberation called Chimurenga, which is simply beyond description - give it a listen, and see if you don't agree - one of the things that blows you away right away is the use of 12/8 time - check out the first track "Shumba" - depending on whether you focus on the "3" or the "4" beat, the song sounds completely different - sort of like a musical M.C. Escher type experience!

There are lots of great resources on the great Mapfumo exist - Google him, and also check out Banning Eyre's writings on the music of Zimbabwe. Thomas is still recording great music, and touring now and then from his home base in Oregon. Essential.

This was the second album with his band, unavailable in the States other than this wonderful vinyl rip I found on Global Groove - thanks for keeping the voice of Zimbabwe ringing out!
